Surface coated fasteners
Unrivaled consistency
Surface treatments help to increase the lifespan of fasteners, improving the perception of quality and ultimate end-user experience. Specifying the correct protection helps to minimize warranty costs and mitigate the risk of field failure – ultimately, maintaining a consistent and reliable performance. To aid designers choosing the ultimate in surface coatings for their coated fasteners, MacDermid Enthone developed the ZinKlad program.
ZinKlad fastener coatings have provided hexavalent chromium-free finishes for automotive applications for over 15 years now. In that time, the ZinKlad program has enabled many global OEM’s to specify higher standards than they had previously achieved. This program delivers unrivaled consistency for ELV compliant coated fasteners which optimize quality, increase durability and extending fastener life, while meeting stringent OEM industry standards.

Fastener Application | Recommended fastener coating | Overview |
---|---|---|
Powertrain |
|
Located under the hood and around the engine, powertrain coated fasteners need to provide excellent performance and durability. For example, corrosion resistance and friction requirements can vary across the engine and transmission systems – our extensive range of coatings for fasteners can be tailored to fit these changing needs. |
Exterior |
|
Exterior coated fasteners are typically found on the chassis areas and on the high visibility body trim on the outside of the car – where the highest level of resistance is required. Prolonged exposure to outside elements and road de-icing chemicals, such as sodium chloride, increases the chance of white and red corrosion on exterior fasteners. Maintaining aesthetic appeal is also important for both end-users and product compliance, due to the prominent position of exterior coated fasteners. ZinKlad 1000 is a silver finish. The black coating is available in various gloss levels B, B-HG and B-EXP. |
Electrical grounding | ZinKlad 750 | As the number of electrical components continues to grow in a vehicle, the importance of maintaining conductivity is critical for coated fasteners used in grounding applications. ZinKlad 750 passes the GMW3200 conductivity test for coated fastener grounding applications and meets the hydrogen embrittlement requirements of GMW4700. |
Interior |
|
Aesthetic appeal and corrosion protection are important for coated fasteners, as they are equally visible to end-users. For components, such as small screws in the dashboard, a sacrificial fastener coating can be effective for both providing a decorative finish or as an adhesive base for paint coatings. |
Safety critical |
Component systems, such as wheels, safety restraints, steering, suspension, and brake fasteners all require safety critical coated fasteners that minimize risk and ensure consistent performance. The benefit of using ZinKlad 250 M is this fastener coating is free of hydrogen embrittlement according to ASTM B695. |
