Chromium-free

Increasing concerns over the health and ecological effects of hexavalent-chromium has inspired the development of alternative solutions. For example architectural our chromium-free Iridite EXD, NR2-I, NR4-T processes use are meet both GSB and QUALICOAT approval systems.

Advantages

Until now, most non-chromium conversion coatings have been based on a combination of organic polymers and fluoride compounds.  While these types of products have excellent paint adhesion characteristics, in most cases, they have no corrosion resistance properties.

Based on that deficiency, MacDermid Enthone developed the Iridite range of chromium-free coatings that has shown to be both safe and effective as a true replacement for the hexavalent chromium systems.

They provide high adhesion values for paints and powder coatings as well as (where applicable) excellent  corrosion resistance in its own right.

Meets environmental directives

Iridite NCP is the safe, reliable and cost effective alternative to chromate based pre-treatments for aluminum and has been developed in response to the ELV, RoHS and WEEE directives.

Iridite NCP does not contain Lead, Cadmium, Chromium(hexavalent or trivalent), Mercury or PBB / PBDE  compounds.

Applications

The coating exhibits bare, unpainted, corrosion resistance that is equal to hexavalent chromates on many  aluminium alloys. The coating can be used as a final finish and can also serve as a base for paints, high performance topcoats, powder paints, lacquers, or as a base for rubber bonding.

When the application is for a paint base only, then Iridite EXD may be considered.

Iridite EXD

QUALICOAT APPROVED

Iridite EXD is an environmentally friendly process developed for the chemical pre-treatment of aluminum and its alloys prior to coating. Its formulation is in complete compliance with  the latest European environmental guidelines (ELV, RoHS, WEEE) and does not contain lead, cadmium, chromium, mercury nor organic or inorganic polymer compounds.

Iridite EXD is a non-chrome conversion coating process that produces an inorganic, almost transparent conversion coating on the degreased and deoxidised aluminum substrate. This coating will provide the perfect base for adhesion of subsequent paint or powder systems and will impart a high corrosion resistance to these systems.  Iridite EXD is suitable for powder coating, wet paint, lacquer and as a base for rubber bonding.

Iridite EXD is also an ideal pre-treatment for zinc-coated steel substrates (HDG) 
and zinc based die-castings prior to painting.

Iridite NR4-T

QUALICOAT APPROVED (A-87)

Iridite NR4-T is a chromium-free, low-temperature, no rinse liquid acid product. It produces conversion coatings with physical properties equal to that of chromate conversion coatings. 

The conversion coatings may have a weight ranging from 0.3 to 2 g/m². The coating colour may vary from light to dark green and the constituents of the conversion coating are primarily trivalent chromium compounds. The conversion coating produced is colorless to light blue. Iridite NR4-T needs no rinsing and is non-polluting.

Iridite NR2-I

Iridite NR2-I chromium-free, low-temperature, no rinse liquid acid product. It produces conversion coatings with physical properties equal to that of chromate conversion coatings. Iridite NR2-I forms a tight adhesive bond with aluminum substrates upon drying. The conversion coating produced is colorless to light blue. Iridite NR2-I needs no rinsing and is non-polluting.

Iridite 14-2

Iridite 14-2 is a chemical process that produces a protective chromate conversion film on aluminum and its alloys. Application is by dip, brush, swab, or spray, producing coatings ranging from clear to dark yellow. The darker coatings providing the greatest corrosion protection. The coating can be used as a final finish or can be dyed various colors. It can also serve as a base for paints and high performance top coats, lacquers, or as a base for rubber bonding.

The operating range of Iridite 14-2 is extremely flexible. Suitable adjustments of the Iridite 14-2 concentration can accommodate wide variations in immersion time, the desired corrosion protection (film thickness), and the alloy to be treated.

  • Coating has minimum effect on electrical characteristics of the aluminum for high or low frequency work when used at lower concentrations
  • Coating protects abraded anodized surfaces and also provides electrical contact to those surfaces
  • Coated aluminum surface can be welded by shielded arc method or by spot welding
  • Qualified under Specification MIL-DTL-81706, Class 1A, Form II, Method A, B, C; and under Class 3, Form II, Method C. The clear Iridite 14-2 finish also qualifies under Class 3, Form II, Method C of the same specification.
    (Specification MIL-DTL-81706 qualifies products for use in conforming to Specification MIL-DTL-5541.

Iridite 15

Iridite 15 is a room temperature, short dip, chemical process for producing a corrosion protective coating on magnesium and magnesium alloys. The coating can be applied by dip or brush and forms an excellent bond with paints and lacquers.
